Standard Energy, the world’s first developer of the Vanadium Ion Battery (VIB), an energy storage technology optimized for ESS applications, will work with Elice Group, which has commercialized an AI Portable Modular Data Center (PMDC), to jointly develop an AI data center solution that can be “deployable anywhere.”

 

Combining AI Modular Data Centers with VIB ESS to Present a “Deployable Anywhere” Solution

Standard Energy announced on May 7 that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Elice Group on May 6 to jointly develop and supply AI modular data centers integrated with VIB-based power solutions, with the goal of advancing power stability and energy efficiency.

Under the partnership, the two companies will cooperate on the joint development and demonstration of data center power infrastructure solutions that connect Standard Energy’s VIB ESS and UPS systems with Elice Group’s AI modular data center, known as Elice AI PMDC. They also plan to jointly develop and commercialize next-generation modular UPS and ESS solutions optimized for AI modular data centers, while advancing an energy management system (EMS) equipped with AI-based predictive diagnostics and automation capabilities.

The companies also agreed to cooperate on national AI data center projects and to work together in supplying power stability solutions that combine AI modular data centers with VIB-based UPS and ESS systems.

Standard Energy will design and develop VIB-based UPS and ESS products suitable for AI modular data centers and establish a stable supply system to support the smooth deployment of VIB UPS and ESS solutions for AI modular data center applications.

Elice Group will provide operational data and information, including power usage patterns from AI modular data centers, to support the advancement of the energy management system. It will also verify compatibility between AI modular data centers and VIB ESS, while providing technical support for the application of AI to next-generation energy management systems.

 

Maximizing the Advantages of Modular Data Centers, a New Paradigm for AI Data Centers, with VIB

As the AI industry continues to grow, demand for additional AI data center capacity is rising, and modular data centers are attracting increasing attention. Unlike conventional AI data centers, which typically take more than three years to build, modular data centers can be deployed in roughly three months because they do not require the construction of a separate dedicated building. They also offer flexibility, allowing infrastructure to be expanded quickly in response to demand.

Elice Group’s AI PMDC is equipped with ECI, or Elice Cloud Infrastructure, an AI cloud virtualization solution that supports the efficient allocation and optimization of large-scale GPU resources. The company provides a full-stack offering that spans AI infrastructure deployment, cloud operations and power-efficiency-oriented management.

VIB ESS is expected to maximize the advantages of modular AI data centers, which can be installed more easily across a wide range of locations. It is also expected to contribute to the stable operation of AI data centers themselves while minimizing the burden on existing power grids.

Based on its ultra-safe characteristics, including no risk of ignition, VIB ESS can be installed in densely populated areas such as urban centers. With its ultra-fast response and high-output performance, it can also perform UPS functions that protect AI systems in the event of sudden power loss.

In addition, when power peaks occur due to AI inference workloads, VIB ESS can rapidly supplement the required high-output electricity within tens of milliseconds, helping prevent performance degradation in AI server racks while reducing stress on the power grid.

“AI modular data centers can help address the physical space constraints of AI data centers, while VIB ESS can help reduce the psychological distance and regulatory concerns associated with data center safety,” said Boo-Ki Kim, CEO of Standard Energy. “The combination of these two technologies could become an important catalyst for expanding AI data center infrastructure.”

He added, “Through ultra-safe, ultra-fast-response, high-output VIB ESS, we also expect to contribute to improving the energy efficiency of AI modular data centers and reducing the burden on power grids.”

“Power infrastructure will become the final battleground for the AI industry,” Kim said. “Through collaboration between Korea’s diverse AI technologies and ultra-safe, ultra-fast-response, high-output VIB ESS, we will work to build a solution for AI power infrastructure.”

Jae-Won Kim, CEO of Elice Group, said, “To operate high-performance GPU resources reliably, infrastructure must not only ensure stable power supply but also respond quickly and safely to rapid changes in power demand.”

“Vanadium Ion Batteries, with no fire concerns and with high-output, fast-response characteristics, can stably compensate for instantaneous power fluctuations caused by AI workloads,” he said. “When combined with Elice’s liquid-cooled AI PMDC, they can improve both power stability and energy efficiency.”

He added, “By leveraging the precise resource management capabilities of Elice Cloud Infrastructure, or ECI, we aim to introduce an innovative AI operating environment to the global market — one that maximizes computing power while minimizing the burden on the power grid.”
