Standard Energy, the world’s first developer of the Vanadium Ion Battery, or VIB, optimized for energy storage systems, has been selected together with Daejeon Transportation Corporation as an outstanding shared-growth institution in “WIN-WIN HONORS,” a program hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
Selected as an Outstanding Shared-Growth Case for a “One-Team” Win-Win Model Between a Public Institution and an Innovative Startup
Standard Energy announced that it had been named a 2026 WIN-WIN HONORS outstanding institution, together with Daejeon Transportation Corporation, in recognition of the results of its Vanadium Ion Battery Energy Storage System demonstration project at Guam Station on Daejeon Metro Line 1. The recognition was presented at the WIN-WIN HONORS commemorative plaque award ceremony held on the 24th.
WIN-WIN HONORS is a program that identifies exemplary cases of shared growth in which large companies and public institutions move beyond one-sided or charitable forms of cooperation and instead create mutual benefits with small and medium-sized enterprises. Since 2023, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups has selected and supported model cases of shared growth through the WIN-WIN HONORS program.
Successfully Demonstrated Improved Energy Efficiency in a Subway Station Using VIB ESS with No Risk of Ignition
Standard Energy and Daejeon Transportation Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding in June 2024 to introduce and demonstrate Vanadium Ion Battery Energy Storage System technology in the urban rail sector. In July 2025, the two organizations installed one VIB ESS unit at Guam Station in Daejeon and began a demonstration project to improve energy-use efficiency in urban rail stations.
Daejeon Transportation Corporation designated the station for the demonstration and provided the relevant site, while Standard Energy was responsible for installing and operating the VIB ESS. The system contributed to improved energy efficiency at the subway station by storing electricity during off-peak hours and supplementing power during peak demand periods.
Because VIB offers a high level of safety with no risk of fire, the ESS could be installed at Guam Station, located near Daejeon Yuseong Express Bus Terminal, an area with heavy foot traffic. The project was also selected as an outstanding demonstration testbed case under the “Public Demand-Based Problem-Solving Demonstration Support Project” led by Daejeon Metropolitan City and Daejeon Technopark, and received the Daejeon Metropolitan City Mayor’s Award last November.
ESS is essential to improving energy-use efficiency in urban rail systems, which rely on a wide range of electrical equipment, including train operations, air conditioning, heating and cooling systems. However, ESS installed in urban rail environments must be absolutely safe, as it needs to be placed inside or near stations. It must also deliver high-output performance to respond immediately to diverse power demands, including those from heating and cooling systems.
The VIB developed by Standard Energy has no risk of ignition and supports high-output charge and discharge. As a result, it is expected to become an optimal solution for improving the power efficiency of urban rail systems.
Contributing to Energy Efficiency and Grid Stability as a Power Infrastructure-Optimized Solution
Building on this demonstration of improved power-use efficiency at an urban rail station using VIB ESS, Standard Energy and Daejeon Transportation Corporation plan to explore additional applications of VIB ESS across various power-saving methods in urban rail operations.
The two organizations also plan to continue cooperation on energy-saving solutions that support urban rail operations, including the storage and use of regenerative braking energy from trains. In addition, they will explore the development of charging infrastructure that uses VIB ESS and urban rail stations for future transportation systems such as urban air mobility and trams.

He added, “As an ESS solution optimized for power infrastructure, VIB will contribute not only to improving power efficiency in urban rail systems but also to enhancing energy efficiency and grid stability across a range of innovative industries.”
