Second VIB ESS Installation in Central Seoul
Standard Energy has installed a Vanadium Ion Battery Energy Storage System (VIB ESS) at Hanyang University’s Seoul campus as part of a government-backed demonstration project focused on improving campus energy efficiency.
The system was installed on August 12 and has entered full operation after passing its pre-use inspection.
It marks Standard Energy’s second VIB ESS installation in central Seoul, following a 2022 regulatory-sandbox project in Apgujeong, where the system supported ultra-fast EV charging.
Supporting Campus Energy Efficiency Through Sector Coupling
The VIB ESS will serve as a sector-coupling resource in the national R&D project, “Development and Demonstration of a Community Energy Management System for Demand-Based Energy Efficiency,” funded through the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning.
Led by GS E&C with Hanyang University and other participating institutions, the project connects distributed energy resources including solar generation, fuel cells and water-electrolysis equipment.
Standard Energy’s VIB ESS will help reduce peak demand, stabilize power quality and improve on-site energy consumption, operating efficiency and energy self-sufficiency.
A university campus is a particularly demanding environment for energy storage, combining multiple generation sources with research facilities, campus amenities and a large daytime population.
This requires both high-power performance and a high level of safety.
Standard Energy’s non-lithium VIB technology uses a water-based electrolyte, delivers energy efficiency of more than 97 percent and can charge or discharge up to four times per hour.
These characteristics enable the system to respond rapidly to changes in power supply and demand while reducing fire-related concerns in densely occupied urban environments.
Demonstrating the Role of ESS in Distributed Power Networks
The Hanyang University project will provide an opportunity to demonstrate how VIB ESS can operate as a flexible energy resource in an environment where multiple generation sources, storage systems and electricity users must work together.
As renewable energy expands and new electricity demand from sectors such as AI continues to grow, power systems are becoming increasingly distributed and complex.
In this environment, ESS is evolving beyond backup power to become essential infrastructure for balancing power supply and demand.
Standard Energy plans to use this project to demonstrate how the safety, high power and rapid response of VIB ESS can support the next generation of distributed energy networks.
